Modern Martial Arts - Lack of Confucian Doctrine Essay

Philosophy is one of the most important aspects of any traditional martial art. The philosophies of many martial arts such as Taekwondo, Kung Fu, and Karate are based off of Confucianism and principles from Confucius’s The Analects. Although traditional martial arts contain philosophical teachings, modern martial arts have lost their meaning, or â€Å"art.† The popularity of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has contributed greatly to the loss of meaning in modern martial arts. By examining the philosophy’s importance in The Analects, one can see how martial arts is more than a physical set of skills. In†¦show more content†¦Throughout history, there have been famous groups of warriors who followed codes of conduct based on Confucianism and Confucius’s script, The Analects. The Samurai of Japan are the most famo us warriors associated with Confucianism, specifically referring to a code called Bushido, and are noted for their display of chivalry to both friends and foes. Chivalry in Asia guides conduct as to inspire and enhance humanity’s development (Simpkins, Annellen and Alex). The ancient Hwa Rang Do warriors of Korea also borrowed ideas from Confucian doctrine. Hwa Rang Do later became known as Taekwondo, the most popular martial art in the world. Taekwondo’s moral culture is influenced by the moral culture of Confucian philosophy (Maguire). Modern Taekwondo is more than a skill/technique set; it is an art. Traditional martial arts, including Taekwondo, integrate the art as a lifestyle, rather than a sport/hobby. Unfortunately, today’s martial arts lack the traditional meanings of martial arts. There is no philosophy or meaning in the UFC/MMA circuits. Many critics condemn the brutal sport because of the lack of rules and protective gear. In the cage (fighting arena), the goal is to win. The fighters are always training and always comparing themselves to other fighters. Even when an opponent is on the ground or knocked out, their opponent attacks until the referee steps in. UFC and MMA fights are unrealistic in their round durations.
